“I mean in a way Obama’s standing above the country, above – above the world, he’s sort of God.”
—Evan Thomas, editor of Newsweek
Imagine for a moment that Limbaugh or O’Reilly or Malkin had uttered these little bits of adoration about Dubya. And now guess what the New York Times and CNN (or the Guardian if you are a Brit, or la Repubblica if you are an Italian, etc.) would do…
You probably hadn't been born in time for the 2000 or 2004 elections. If you had been around you would have seen that the evangelicals all believed George W Bush was sent by the good Lord to save America from itself. These people really believed that Bush was god's candidate and he hinted at such.
ReplyDeleteOne trusts that Obama won't 'fall into the well' of his own 'holier than thou' style and become a prisoner of it. This and his rhetoric is superb, but in essence he repeats (in Cairo) what Bush has always said, but embellished with diplomacy flannel that Bush would never have used, fortunately or unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteObama's greatest test is still on the horizon, and the results of the Lebanese elections must have come as temporary relief, also for him..
But to return to the 'well'. It's a fine story of being pushed into such a pit and come out smiling, to the amazement of one's 'friends'. But if one makes a parallel, for example the American population is pushed into the pit, how many Americans are capable of climbing back out again and smiling?
If Iran, for example, pushes the West into the pit, will the West be able to climb out and smile, and will climbing out smiling solve the problem? Would it not be far better to avoid being pushed into the pit in the first place?
Turning the other cheek is a noble reaction, as long as one still has another cheek to turn.
Well, you don't really have to imagine that far. Those same ppl who did praise Bush to the high heavens and caught flack for it are the same ppl who are giving someone like this a lot of crap - whether they're comparing Obama to God or just calling him a good President. Every side has its faults.
ReplyDeleteThis is wrong on so many levels...poor America.
