Sean Connery was born into a working-class Edinburgh family. And this, perhaps paradoxically, is the key reason why, at least in my view, he was perfect in the roles of kings (e.g. King Arthur in
First Knight and Richard the Lionheart in
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), intellectuals (e.g. Brother William of Baskerville in
The Name of the Rose and Professor Henry Jones in
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), “masters & commanders” (e.g. Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez in
Highlander and Captain Marko Ramius in
The Hunt for Red October).
In other words, he was the living proof that true aristocracy, in all of its variants, is exclusively a matter of personality.
Rest in Peace, Sir Sean.
